About Us

A Mão Branca is a charitable institution for long-term permanence of elderly people, created in 1912 by a group of Syrian-Lebanese ladies of São Paulo. With the expertise and professionalism resulting from 100 years of assistance to elderly people, A Mão Branca has become a reference in the Gerontology and Geriatrics areas.

Mission
Our pledge is to assist elderly of both sexes in a boarding or day boarding system, regardless of their social class, religion or race, financial or dependence status.

Vision
- Maintain a standard of excellence in the assistance to elderly people
- Fulfill the increasing demand of Long-Term Permanence Institutions for Elderly

Background
In 1912, a group of Syrian-Lebanese ladies used to meet every week in São Paulo in order to assist elderly people, to whom provisions and medical care were given. With headquarters in Santo Amaro neighborhood (in São Paulo), these women hosted and treated with love and affection the first elders. The group grew and new projects and activities were developed.

In order to preserve the Arab culture of always helping the needy and maintaining the tradition of charitable works that do not allow abandonment, A Mão Branca was created as a beneficent institution that leads its efforts to abandoned elderly people.

1/3 of the elderly in the boarding system are free guests and the others contribute according to their possibilities. 60% are dependent, 30% are partially independent and only 10% are entirely independent. The prevailing age group is between 70 and 85 years old.

A Mão Branca – 99 years

When I look at the sea of a beautiful Brazilian beach, I wonder: Did our Syrian-Lebanese founders who came from a faraway and different place ever imagined that this small association would achieve 99 years of existence as it has today?

Three generations have passed, and A Mão Branca has renewed itself every generation according to the Geriatrics and Gerontology developments of that time.

Today, in the dawn of a new century, and after achieving excellence treating elderly and providing loving care, leisure and human touch to each individual, A Mão Branca wishes to achieve a new level: Assistance Center for Elderly.

People usually feel lost after retirement. The desired “rest” is just an empty space that leads to depression. When we noticed this difficult reality, we decided to enhance our experience and go by this new path.

We are certain that this new enterprise will be successful as we are supported by the A Mão Branca family: Collaborators, directors, volunteers, administrative staff, technical staff – physicians, social worker, occupational therapist, nutritionists, nurses, technicians, nursing assistants, and caregivers, as well as all employees working with infrastructure: Kitchen, laundry, reception, cleaning – People who work, as have always worked, as one single huge heart.
